Valentine week: 8 days upheld to celebrate romantic love, friendship and devotion. Named after Saint Valentine, it is a traditional holiday honouring St Valentine or Valentinus, a Roman priest in the 3rd Century. Legend had it that while being imprisoned for marrying off Christians couples against the then Emperor Claudius II wishes, Valentine started to care for his jailor’s blind daughter and he cured her. That his final act before being executed was to write her a love message signed ‘from your Valentine’. The saint was martyred about AD 269 and buried on the Via Flaminia. Though Valentine’s Day is celebrated as a tribute to him on February 14 each year, it was not until much later, that the day became associated with love. During the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of birds mating season which added to the idea that the middle of Valentine’s Day should be a day for romance. And it wasn’t until 200 years later after his execution that 14 February was proclaimed to be Saint Valentines Day.

Valentine’s day in contemporary days is mostly related to romantic love with millions of cards, flowers and chocolates being exchanged each year.
