Having your kids happy and cool in the Indian summer months is no mean task! With summer vacations approaching fast, we have compiled a few things that will ease your task, both in keeping them physically cool as well as joyfully occupied.
First and foremost, it’s very important to make sure that children are well hydrated, especially as they don’t realise their thirst until it’s too late and they are reeling from a heat stroke. It may be difficult to have them gulp down major quantities of water, so a fun way is to make a jug of flavoured water…with slices of oranges, lemons and cucumbers.
Make your kids wear loose clothes of cotton, as well as flipflops or sandals. Have them slather on sunscreen and put on fashionable sunglasses to protect their skin and eyes from the sun.
A fun activity to do with the little ones is to make fruit popsicles. Combine different fruit, like peaches with cream, watermelon pops, or even coconut water with pineapple pieces. Put these in popsicle moulds and freeze. They are sure to enjoy these in the heat, especially as they would have made them themselves.
A way to go to bed nice and cool is to put your covering sheet in the freezer for a few minutes before covering yourself!
Frozen T Shirts Game
This is a fast paced game that youngsters will love! Prepare a T shirt for each child by completely soaking it, and then wringing it out. Fold each one and place in a stack with baking sheets between them to keep them separate, and freeze them. When they are stiff, hand them out to each player. Whichever player wears his tee first, wins!
Have Fun with Ice
Fill a small tub with water and freezable toys and treats and stick it in the freezer. Small children will have hours of fun excavating them from the ice. • Water balloons are not only for Holi! Have a blast and keep cool in the bargain!!
Encourage the whole family to spend long hours in the swimming pool. Make sure that everyone has their waterproof sunscreen on.
Make ice cubes coloured with edible colour and which have half an ice cream stick stuck into it. Give it to toddlers along with plain sheets of paper and they will be occupied for ages.
Making summer activities fun and water filled will have your kids screaming for more and out of your hair too when all you want is to relax with a tall glass of something icy cold!
